What to expect.
This is a relaxed, hands-on introduction to ice hockey officiating. No experience needed, and you don't have to commit to anything. Just bring your skates and an open mind.
Get on the Ice
Skate through real officiating scenarios with a whistle in hand. You'll learn positioning, basic signals, and how officials move with the play.
Learn from the Best
Experienced NEWHOA officials walk you through the fundamentals in a supportive, low-pressure setting. Ask anything.
No Commitment
There's no cost and no obligation. Come check it out. If you love it, we'll show you exactly how to get started as a registered official.
What to bring.
Keep it simple. You only need your own skates and basic protective gear. We'll provide the whistles and on-ice instruction.
- Ice skates — hockey or figure skates are both fine, as long as they fit well.
- Helmet — a hockey helmet is strongly recommended for anyone on the ice.
- Warm, flexible clothing — athletic layers you can move and skate in comfortably.
- Water bottle — stay hydrated through the two hours on the ice.
- An open mind — curiosity and a willingness to try something new are all the experience you need.
